Benefits - Algonquin Students' Association

The Student Health Plan gives you health and dental coverage beyond what is offered through the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP). Our health insurance is offered through WeSpeakStudent, and it helps reduce the fees for private health coverage.

How the Health Plan Works

Eligible students who start their classes in the Fall (September) or Winter (January) semesters receive coverage until August 31 for:

  • Prescriptions (e.g. birth control)
  • Dental (e.g. cleanings, extractions)
  • Vision (e.g. glasses, eye exams)
  • Paramedical (e.g. psychologist, physiotherapist) – (Select plans)
  • Accidents
  • Travel
  • We Connect (counseling & support)

Eligible students who start their classes in the Spring (May) semesters receive coverage until August 31 for:

  • Prescriptions (e.g. birth control)
  • Accidents
  • Travel
  • We Connect (counseling & support)

After August 31, if you have classes and meet eligibility requirements, you may select a Flex Plan and will be covered until the following August 31.

Customize Your Coverage

All eligible students are automatically enrolled in the Balanced Plan, which evenly distributes coverage across each area. If you need more (or less) coverage in one of those areas, you may be able to change to a Flex Plan to increase the maximum limit in the area of your choice.

Who Can Use a Flex Plan

Flex plans are only available in the Fall (September) or Winter (January) semesters.

Students who start class in the Spring (May) semester are enrolled in the Balanced Plan and have coverage for prescriptions and accidents until August 31. You may select a Flex Plan in September if you continue to have classes and meet eligibility requirements.

Flex Plan Selection Deadline

You may only change your coverage plan during your first semester of class within the current Student Health Plan coverage period.

If you miss the deadline, your next opportunity to change your coverage will be the following September 1, if you meet the eligibility requirements.

No exceptions will be made for missed deadlines.

How to Change Your Plan

  1. Check if you are within the Flex Plan Selection Period
  2. Visit WeSpeakStudent.com and select Algonquin College
  3. Click on “Choose Your Plan” and follow the instructions
